The history of High Darling
Our noble and light organic Darjeeling High Darling is not only one of the bestsellers of our collection, but also one of the ten founding varieties, which we served on November 3, 2002 with our first samova dancing tea. Like all black, caffeinated teas of the samova start collection, High Darling was given a name component with "High", which in its double interpretation winkingly reminds of a state of intoxication. At the same time, the word alludes to the very high altitude where the tea is grown. Last but not least, High Darling can also be used phonetically to greet your sweetheart, and Darjeeling is also somehow involved in Darling - what more could you want?The Darjeeling variety is considered the "champagne" among black teas, since the elaborate processing, the light taste, the stimulating feeling and the noble, protected area of origin are comparable to the basic parameters of the sparkling beverage. But what really makes Darjeeling tea so special? In contrast to stronger tea varieties, such as Assam or Ceylon, tea from the northern Indian mountain region of Darjeeling is made from the smaller, finer leaves of the tea bush variety Sinensis sinensis. These have particularly fine aromatic substances. Over the years, cultivars have been developed that thrive particularly well in Darjeeling's humid and misty high-altitude climate of up to 2000 meters. Overall, this altitude presents the tea plant with a small but necessary challenge: it grows more slowly than in the lowlands, so that a higher concentration of aromatic substances occurs in each leaf. Darjeeling teas therefore taste particularly floral.
From the best organic tea gardens
Our organic Darjeeling High Darling has as a second flush (second plucking) a special spiciness in taste. In the first years of samova, we were not only able to offer a pure vintage plantation tea, but also to quantify the respective harvest of the tea garden. With increasing demand for High Darling and the resulting larger production volume, we expanded our purchasing area to include neighboring organic plantations, which still meet our high standards of purity and quality today. The batches are thus still vintage pure and now a blend of three contiguous gardens. We present these on this page.Happy Valley Tea Garden
Happy valley! Anyone blessed with such a fantastic panoramic view of the city of Darjeeling and the Himalayan mountains in the background is not surprised by the name of the tea garden in the Indian state of West Bengal: "Happy Valley". Located between Nepal and Bhutan at an altitude of more than 2000 meters, the plantation covers 177 hectares, of which 123 hectares are used for tea cultivation. Annual production capacity of Happy Valley Tea Estate: about 50,000 kilos of tea. Due to the unique geographical location with the humid and foggy climate, the tea from there is extremely aromatic. After difficult years and mismanagement with brief closure, the plantation has been producing in the best organic quality and fully certified since 2007.
Moondakotee tea garden
It is the cool breeze in the rolling hills in the north of Kurseong, about 30 kilometers from the city of Darjeeling, that favors the growth and aroma of the leaves from the Moondakotee tea garden. Almost 300 hectares of tea growing area of the total 583 hectares plantation produces 140,000 kilos of tea annually. A special irrigation system makes it possible to tap water from natural springs in certain sections. After the current operators took over in 2004, the concept of the tea garden has been fundamentally changed to a holistic, socially responsible plantation with biodynamic cultivation methods and a factory certified according to international food standards. In the social field, Moondakotee Tea Estate is involved in the drinking water supply of various villages in the area and a livestock farm that, among other things, provides free milk to children.
Ambootia tea garden
The tea garden in the village of Ambootia at the foot of the Himalayas near the town of Darjeeling has already experienced and survived a lot in the 160 years since it was founded: landslides, complete destruction of the tea factory by fire as well as debts, unpaid workers and closure due to mismanagement. When the plantation was taken over by new operators in 1994, things started to look up again with a completely different concept. Biodynamic and environmentally friendly cultivation methods and social commitment were adopted early on. Today, the average annual production of Ambootia Tea Estate is 150,000 kilos of tea, harvested from 353 hectares of cultivated land (out of a total area of 966 hectares). The management runs three elementary school for the workers' children, and the workers' families also receive free medical treatment at a local hospital. And flowers, herbs and spices such as ginger are grown on the plantation area, the sale of which supplements the tea pickers' income. "Nature & More" from the Netherlands, an independent foundation that evaluates sustainability and quality of organic food, has awarded the Ambootia Tea Garden.
