Let’s Cradle
to Cradle!
Having fun with consumption and being good for the environment at the same time: samova chooses the path of the certified circular economy.
Everything becomes nutrient,
there is no more rubbish.
It all started over an iced tea at the »Wacken Open Air 2019« music festival: samova founder Esin Rager, who was there as an expert on environmentally friendly products, met two committed eco-campaigners during a workshop break:
chemist Professor Dr Michael Braungart, known for his »Cradle to Cradle« concept, and his colleague Markus Diem, site manager at EPEA GmbH in Hamburg.
This company, founded by former Greenpeace campaigner Braungart, supports companies and brands that have decided to make their actions and business activities uncompromisingly environmentally friendly.
Cradle to Cradle® is a registered trademark of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC (MBDC). Cradle to Cradle Certified™ is a certificate exclusively licensed to the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The first samova products to carry the official »Cradle to Cradle« certificate will be our loose teas in the samova tea tin. In addition to the labelling on the packaging, small booklets inside the tin will provide information about the circular economy model.
»Cradle to Cradle is a school of thought that says: We are an opportunity for the planet, not a burden«, Braungart summarises his approach and continues:
»We have to reinvent everything: The parts that wear out go into biological cycles. All things that are used go into technical cycles. So there is no more waste. Everything becomes a nutrient for the biosphere or the technosphere.«
After returning to her everyday business life, Esin can no longer get this plausible approach out of her head: "The great thing about this model is that it doesn't declare the economy to be the enemy, but rather rethinks and promotes it. Environmental protection and consumption are mutually beneficial. The initially unusual-sounding conclusion is: while I consume, I am good for the environment." After further research, Esin Rager's decision is clear: from now on, all samova product packaging will be gradually developed, tested and revised according to »Cradle to Cradle« standards. »We look at all the basic categories of environmental and social compatibility and then summarise this in the certificate,« says Braungart, explaining the process. The samova tinplate tea tin is the first candidate for the »Cradle to Cradle« certificate, with all other product categories to follow as soon as possible.
And because beauTEAful ideas don't just make sense to us, we were also able to get our sales partner Seeberger excited about this model. Verena Schädler, Sustainability Officer at Seeberger, comments: »We are also committed to this approach and have set the course towards a circular economy.«
