The tea revolution took place more than a hundred years ago. It developed slowly and was more due to chance. Tea merchant Thomas Sullivan from New York is said to have accidentally invented the tea bag in 1904 (or perhaps it was 1908). He sewed samples into silk bags and sent them to his customers - instead of packing loose tea in metal tins as was customary at the time. Each of his bags contained the right amount for a cup of the warming drink. Legend has it that Sullivan's customers did not take the tea out of the bag as intended, but poured hot water directly over the bags and left them to infuse in the drinking vessel.
The tea bag: a practical idea catches on
There are many stories surrounding the invention of the tea bag, Thomas Sullivan's is the best known. One thing is certain: The practical idea started its triumphal march at the beginning of the 20th century and caught on worldwide. Many tea connoisseurs turn up their noses at the thought of tea bags. They swear by the full aroma of loose tea or loose herbs and the almost meditative ceremony of brewing. Other tea drinkers around the world are more pragmatic and rely on the unbeatable arguments of the bags with the thin thread: convenient, quick to brew and easy to dispose of.
In the first few years, samova only sold loose tea in tins and refill bags. However, samova founder Esin Rager responded to repeated demand from the catering and hotel industries and office customers and developed the Express collection: paper tea bags in paper envelopes. Double chamber bags made from banana leaves: garden compostable
All Express varieties are presented in a classic double-chamber bag. This ensures full enjoyment, as the tea is surrounded by water over a larger area, allowing the aroma and taste to develop fully. An Express bag contains 1.4 to 2.2 grams, depending on the type of tea. Each box contains 20 express tea bags.
And of course, as a pioneer in the fight against packaging waste, samova attaches great importance to appropriate materials: all double-chamber bags from the Express collection are made from the plant fiber Abacá, which is obtained from banana leaves and is completely garden-compostable. This is the highest level of compostability. Including the tea, of course.
To protect the express bags from moisture and preserve the full aroma, each one is placed in an envelope made of NatureFlex film. These in turn are made from wood pulp, which comes from controlled sustainable forestry and is also approved for composting.
