The history of Team Spirit

The creation of our Team Spirit variety is one of the most beautiful stories in samova's company history - and living proof of our motto "We believe in friendship and tasty hot water"!
Once upon a time, Germany was to host the soccer World Cup in 2006. And so the city of Hamburg also wanted to cut a good figure as host to the world. The association Jugend und Sport e. V. was responsible for putting together a program for the fans in the Hanseatic city. The managing director of the association at that time, Dieter Bänisch, and samova founder Esin already knew each other from previous projects, and so it came about that Dieter asked Esin if she could imagine organizing a dance tea on the subject of the World Cup, at which the association could present its program to the public. Esin could imagine this very well, especially since she found the idea exciting to unite two not exactly obviously related topics like soccer and tea. The cooperation was a done deal!
In the first step of the collaboration, Esin set about developing the tea: she wrote down terms on a sheet of paper that she associated with the topic of soccer and that she could playfully translate into tea ingredients with a wink: Strategy (ginkgo), green turf (lemongrass), the right kick (green tea), Brazil (jatoba or mate), team spirit... ah, stop, that's what the official adidas World Cup ball was supposed to be called... and it was a great match for the samova claim "we believe in friendship..." - the teen name Team Spirit was born!
Esin, who was heavily pregnant with her second son Sinan at the time and about to hold the dance tea for the Alberta Rodeo variety, wrote a short email to her trademark lawyer asking him to please check the availability of the Team Spirit name for tea. What happened next is samova history: The Alberta Rodeo dance tea was celebrated with a lot of fun, four days later Esin's and Stefan's second son Sinan Anton saw the light of day, - and two weeks later Esin's lawyer came back with bad news: The name Team Spirit was protected worldwide by the Underberg Group, also for the tea category! "I don't see any chance there, the Underberg company is known to have established trademark law in Germany and to strictly pursue violations of its rights," the legal expert concluded his analysis. As it turned out, "Team Spirit" is the name of the specialized gastronomy team of the Underberg company - and has been since 1998.

But Team Spirit wouldn't be Team Spirit if this issue were quickly shelved... "Please write to Underberg and ask if they could grant us a license for the name," she asked her lawyer from home. He didn't give her much hope of success - and was all the more surprised when Esin reported to him some time later that the Underberg Group's legal counsel had contacted her on her cell phone with good news: "The Underberg family has inquired about your brand and appreciates it very much when women are equally committed to their family and to business. You are very welcome to license the Team Spirit teen name from us - and we would love to invite you and meet you if your time and circumstances permit."

And so it came about that our soccer tea was called Team Spirit and a roaring dance tea was celebrated in the World Cup year 2006, - all in the spirit of the friendship of the sports-mad little and big people from all over the world! Our tea variety Team Spirit stormed directly on place 1 of our tea collection and plays since then as an absolute best-seller in our team. Hamburg cut a good figure as the World Cup city in the 2006 summer fairy tale, and the Underberg and Rager families got to know each other personally a few months after the Team Spirit tea. Their companies remain on friendly terms to this day.

Inspiration

For the 2006 World Cup, we took on the challenge of developing a samova tea on the theme of soccer and fan culture in cooperation with the association Jugend und Sport e. V. (Youth and Sport). Nirvana's homage to the right to rebellion in a purely profit-oriented performance (sports) society inspired us in our creation.

Team Spirit in Finland

After his adventures in Namibia, our Master Tea-Jay "Amando" traveled to Finland in the summer of 2019, where he and his good friend "Gigi" visited the most beautiful places in the region and transformed them into a setting for delicious samova tea cocktails with Team Spirit.
We conceived this enjoyment journey in collaboration with our partners Visit Vaasa, Visit Finland and the travel professionals from Wikinger Reisen; for the documentary, film director, photographer and cameraman Philippe Opigez and his colleague Ole von Donar und Edelmann supplemented the creative TEAm. The four entertaining episodes were published in 14-day intervals on our YouTube channel "samovaTeaVee" and are now permanently available there.
The special thing about it: All tea cocktail recipes of the trip are embedded in the films as a chart and can be simply photographed and remixed by interested parties in pause mode. Stickers and flyers in all Team Spirit sales cans refer to our cooperation for one year and invite to a very special raffle: With a bit of luck, those who take part will be able to travel through Finland with a friend in the footsteps of Gigi and Amando the following year.
